August 2016 Jacqueline & Stevie - Hey JP, I wanted to email you to thank you again for such a wonderful weekend. My birthday was perfect, we all loved it! The food and the service at The Old Forge was great and the meat eaters were all raving about the beef. We had a brilliant night with my cousin Steven singing and playing the guitar.
The Old Byre is wonderful. So confortable and you have thought of everything. Arriving to Champagne was such a lovely touch and much appreciated. We made full use of the kitchen and the BBQ, and the garden. The beds and showers were great too. We loved the Skye skins rug so much we bought one and told them you were advertising for them. The dog is never off the rug.
We didn't want to leave, and if we have brought enough dog food we would have asked to stay on a few more nights! We would all love to come back, thank you for the CD too ;-) I hope we will stay with you again in the future.
My birthday couldn't have been any better. Thanks for helping to make our memories so special.

Jan 2013 What an amazing location and what a lovely pub! I was really surprised to find a pub of such high quality in such a remote location as they have no competition! They had several real ales on tap, the one I tasted was very well kept. My friend had a hot chocolate which looked amazing with loads of little marshmallows. The young staff were very friendly and efficient and let us order a snack even though the kitchen was supposed to have closed 5 minutes earlier. We only had soup as we had bought some picnic food to eat but I hope to go back at some stage to have a full meal as the menu was good and the food looked and smelt lovely. This pub was also packed with friendly locals, many pubs in central London would kill for the sort of numbers in there on a January Friday afternoon. Beeza London
Dec 2012 Dear JP and the team at The Old Forge. We are writing to thank you for the wonderful hospitality shown to us during our wedding in Inverie. We had really memorable stay and enjoyed catching up on matters Huntly with Ian on the Saturday night. We also greatly your food and refreshments, and the atmosphere in the bar! Our social record was more successful than our Munroe climbing one - scoring 0 out of 2 (due to a combination of weather and questionable climbing skills). However, we'll be back to give it another go - the next time in spring/summer we hope. Nov 2009 - Roland McCabe – www.restaurant-guide.com
A wonderful eatery made even more wonderful if it has taken you two plus days to walk there. It's best to book especially on those likely busy nights but they always have a pot of seafood soup on the go. The quality of cooking and service is good for a pub so remote but the quality of seafood and other local produce is absolutely superb. The wine is basic. The locally brewed bitter and guest beers are also excellent, it’s really worth the trip however you get there.
OCT 2009 - From web sailing blog http://gerrypentleton.com/
Our plan was to head for Loch Nevis pick up a mooring at the Old Forge and have an evening meal ashore. The Old Forge is recognised as the remotest pub in mainland Britain and cannot be accessed by road, only by sea or a hell of a long walk!! The moorings laid by the hotel were very busy and since my last trip in here there is also a new pier to the left of the Old Forge as you look at it from the sea. However we eventually found a spare one and went ashore in the dinghy only to be told as they were so busy that we could either get a table now - or one at 2130 - now seemed good - so we had an incredibly tasty seafood platter then back to Sun Dog to stretch out. It never ceases to amaze me that somewhere so remote can be so busy, but there again the food is so good and seafood so fresh, with helpful friendly staff, that perhaps I shouldn’t be!
SEP 2009 - Hi all at the Old Forge ( and our new friends down at the beach)Thanks for all the hospitality we received at the pub and on Knoydart, we ate great food drank good beer and enjoyed the atmosphere. If you could pass on an extra big thanks to the person who returned my jacket and camera from down on the beach.
Cheers Andy Green and friends
SEP 2009 - Good Evening Jackie, Just wanted to drop you all a quick line or two in thanks for a dam fine "bite and pint" at lunch time followed by a cracking meal on Saturday night, we could not have wished for more!!
Many thanks and best regards, Graham.
JULY 2009 - Yacht Grania Blog
The Old Forge pub the remotest pub in the uk. 17 miles over 3 munros or by boat (we did'nt walk!) - away at 7 this morning to get to this lovely spot. -And had another sunny afternoon fishing and drinking G&T's :-) Sea food meal excellent - currently enjoying sunset & another hot choc! JULY 2009 - Hi there, I just wanted to say thanks for your kindness & hospitality last week. We were staying at Tigh-na-feigh for the week and you helped us greatly with the loan of a therapeutic back warmer and the use of your mooring and dinghy. I’m sorry that we never really got the chance to thank you for that before we left on Friday. We enjoyed our first visit to Knoydart greatly, and our little ones, Georgie & Sammie had a fine time, not least when playing with Anna & Struan. I’m sure we’ll be back! Best wishes from Catterline in the arctic East, Jillian & David Evans. PS we particularly enjoyed the lovely food and fine ale at the Old Forge… currently wearing my combat trousers with pride!
JUNE 2009 - Hi Jackie, thanks again for your hospitality over the weekend, wall to wall funshine! I’ve stuck the first batch of pictures online, if you want any high resolution versions, just tell me which, and I’ll email them too you. I’m sure there’ll be loads more when the rest of the gang forward theirs to me for inclusion on the site so I’ll let you know if there’s any significant updates. http://www.blackmask.biz/galleries.html Catch up soon regards Gordon Mackay Blackmask
JUNE 2009 - Hello Jackie and Ian Thank you for catering for us at the weekend. It was a great couple of days and the customers really enjoyed it. It was great to meet you both and to get to know the area a bit better. The pier you have is a great facility and works really well. We will put some on the site about the 26th of June and hopefully we will get up for that.
Regards, Cameron & Struan Smith www.coastal-connection.co.uk
MAY 2009 - Just a quick note to tell you how much my cousin and I enjoyed the beer, food and craic in the Forge earlier this week. We may not be back for some time but won't fail to recommend the pub to our friends.
Best regards. Ian Nixon.
MAY 2009 - Hi Jackie and Ian, just a quick note to say thanks very much for all your hospitality at the weekend, we all had a truly perfect weekend, everyone was so friendly, the food and beer was spectacular, the atmosphere in the Old Forge is fantastic and even the weather was ideal. Added to that, the short boat journey from Mallaig to Knoydart really makes you feel a million miles from the humdrum of everyday life back here. Our gig in the heart of Dundee tonight will be quite a shock to the system by comparison! We wouldn’t hesitate to come and play again if and when you’d have us!
All the best Fergus, Fiona, Ian and Dave (Band Nothing Concrete)
MAY 2009 - Dear All Our wedding was the best day of our lives. We would like to thank you
all so much for helping to make this happen.Right from our arrival in Inverie, everyone was so kind and welcoming. We knew immediately, that we had chosen the right place for our wedding. The food that you provided was fabulous. We were all, vegetarians and fish and meat eaters alike very happy with all the meals at the Old Forge through the duration of our stay on Knoydart. But our wedding day was very special and you all played a part in making it so for us. We have taken away many happy memories and already feel a connection with Inverie and Knoydart, it's a very special place and we look forward to returning.
Love & Best Wishes Deryl & Mark
APRIL 2009 - There are many excellent pubs to use after a walk. The Wasdale Head Inn & Old Dungeon Ghyll in Wasdale and Great Langdale respectively are most appealing after a long day in the Lakeland fells. Equally the Clachaig in Glencoe would a deserving nomination and there will undoubtedly be other worthwhile candidates from other locations throughout the British Isles. However for me there’s one place that best fits the accolade, the Old Forge at Inverie, an establishment that had been described as Britain’s most remote pub. Having carried out extensive research into numerous pubs within the UK the is nowhere quite like the Old Forge. Despite it feeling like its located on a Scottish isle it isn’t, I can assure you its on the mainland though its only accessible either by boat from Mallaig or by foot across tough walking territory known as the bounds of Knoydart. There are many great things about the Old Forge but what makes it better than anywhere else is you really have to make an effort to get there.
We based ourselves at the Foundation Bunkhouse in Inverie and enjoyed four days walking climbing Munro’s and Corbetts. One particularly memorable day involved an arduous eight hour day climbing Ladhar Bheinn, the highest point on Knoydart at 3,346 feet, trudging through snow from 2,500 feet. A magnificent circular walk involving a not too precipitous ridge, which culminated in seeking reward at the splendid Old Forge.
The pub itself is located near the jetty with wonderful views of Loch Nevis and mountains, the sunsets are to die for. On our visit prior to Easter 2008 Deuchars IPA was the sole real ale but in the in the summer months when the trade increases there are usually two real ales available from the likes of Isle of Skye and Glenfinnan Breweries The top shelf contains a decent number of malts and the food is excellent.Fresh seafood is plentiful, Langoustines, Scallops, Mussels, Smoked salmon, Lobsters, Oysters, and Sea Bass regularly make an appearance while Venison burgers are very popular. Live music is a regular feature, often a punter playing his own (or someone else’s) musical instrument. The Old Forge has won many accolades including being featured as one of only 3 of “Scotland’s bloody good pubs” by Peter Irvine and in The Guardian Guide to Gastropubs. It’s a truly magic place and a perfect place to spend an evening especially after a day’s walking in Knoydart. Keith http://www.ivebeenthere.co.uk/travellers/KeithK8
FEB 2009 - Thanks for looking after us Ian. We had a great visit and a nostalgic time over at Airor, it must of been a tough existence there, no Forge to retreat to when the nights draw in. We will be back in August with the inlaws to sample some more of your fish pie and real ales.
Thanks again (Sarah and Mark from Montrose)
JAN 2009 - Yeha - recovering from Hogmany, have you seen my camera, bag and tent by any chance - never made it back to the long beach but well worth it - Thanks for the headtorch Ian.
Stephen Chisholm (Whitby)
DEC 2008 - "Booked for next year, save me 2 venison steaks for July 6th. Will also buy a low D whistle for our next soujorn, spoons dont cut it at a ceilidh
Elaine and John Cooper (Coulsdon)
DEC 2008 - Thank you to the staff at the Old Forge for a great 3 days on Knoydart. Especially to the chef. The seafood platter was mesmeric, ive never eaten scallops straight from the ocean before. They were out of this world. Please say a big thankyou to your scallop diver for showing Jenny how to "shuck" them, now she can do them for me at home! (haha!)The Staff looked after us very well, you guys deserve your award, your the best pub we found in Scotland. Have a great 2009 Jenny, Mark and Ollie
